Sub-series VI/E:
Scientific Records, Experimental Data
Scientific records, notes, papers, photographs, and publications in this section derive from the research done at the Johns Hopkins Pavlovian Laboratory, at the Veterans Administration Laboratory, and finally at the University of Louisville, where Gantt conducted research in the last few years of his life.
Boxes 133-143 contain general data files arranged chronologically. These files follow no particular format, but include charts, lists, narrative descriptions, and notes of experimental observations. In some cases the particular experiment is indicated, but in many cases the particular study can only be deduced from the date.
Boxes 145-147 contain laboratory notebooks and logbooks of observed data on particular animals or for particular experiments. For example, a notebook entitled "Experiments, dogs Louisville, 23 Aug 1979-24 Oct 1979," contains observations of dog behavior, written largely in Gantt's shorthand.

Box 148-151Lab Logbooks, Conditional Reflex Experiments, Dogs. — 1930-1965
Box 151 contains samples of electrocardiographs taken on animals for various experiments.
Box 152-162Patient Records
Patient records reveal that Gantt saw patients in the Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at Johns Hopkins primarily as an adjunct to his research. (The files contain only a few cases of psychotherapeutic involvement with patients.) These records are typically of conditional reflex tests performed on humans. Because the patients are identified and their symptoms sometimes described, access to these confidential medical records is restricted.
Box 163-164Records of Scientific Exhibits, Including Correspondence, Notes, Visitor Registers. — 1947-1964
Items relating to exhibits are arranged chronologically, and include correspondence, notes, drafts of text, visitors' registers, and a few diagrams. Photographs of exhibited material and of actual exhibits are filed separately with the scientific photographs.
Box 165-167Teaching Records. — 1937-1967
Although Gantt's favored teaching method was the informal exchange of ideas among colleagues and students in the laboratory and at tea, he was also somewhat active in formal classroom teaching. The collection includes records of three teaching assignments dating from 1936 to 1967. He taught an elective course in experimental psychopathology as part of his appointment at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, from which the collection has notes and student exercises. Students were required to observe and describe dog behavior, and were given the task of forming conditional reflexes under a variety of conditions. Gantt also taught pharmacology at the University of Puerto Rico, and the papers include his lectures and tests from that teaching experience. Gantt's papers reveal his keen interest in the education of young people, and in addition to holding informal "seminars" with neighborhood children, he taught a course in behavioral science to advanced high school students at the Maryland Academy of Sciences. Included are notes, attendance lists, a few letters from the students, and student exercises and exams. On one of these exams, Gantt asks, "In your opinion can science prove or disprove the existence of God - Give your answer in one sentence." (Student Exams, Maryland Academy of Sciences, 11/30/66. Box 167). The students' answers are in the papers.
Box 168Scientific Records, Information Files
Most of the information files probably kept by Gantt were no longer intact when received at the Medical Archives. Six which remain include notes, letters, bibliographical information, and reprints relating to a particular subject matter. Subjects are "renal conditional reflexes," "schizokinesis," "vitamins," "lysergic acid," and "heart rate." Scientific clipping files include clippings about dogs, animal rights, and psychiatry (10 folders, 1945-1979).
