Administrative/Biographical History

From its inception in 1961 within the Photographic Service of the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine, the unit responsible for producing motion pictures for the School of Medicine was renamed several times and operated under various divisions within the School.
In 1967, the motion picture production unit was relocated within the newly created Division of Audiovisual Medicine under the Dean of the Medical Faculty, while a separate television production unit was handled jointly between the Division of Audiovisual Medicine and the John F. Kennedy Institute. In 1971, the scope of the division was expanded and renamed as the Division of Educational Media and Technology, handling full administrative responsibility for both motion picture and television production units. The Division was renamed again in 1975, as the Division of Audiovisual Services. Finally, in 1978, the two production units merged as the Department of Motion Pictures and Television within the renamed Division of Audiovisual Programs.
In the 1980s the Department began to phase out film production to focus exclusively on video, eventually being renamed Johns Hopkins Medical Video in 1993.

Scope and Content

The collection includes original production elements, outtakes, and completed prints of films produced by the motion picture production department within the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In addition to films produced by the department, the collection also contains discarded medical and educational films the department received from the Audiovisual Division of the William H. Welch Medical Library and films received by various individuals and departments within the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
