Hugh J. Jewett was born in Baltimore. He earned his A.B. in 1926 from the Johns Hopkins University and his M.D. in 1930 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He specialized in the two most common cancers of the genitourinary system: prostate cancer and bladder cancer. Jewett joined the staff of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the school of medicine faculty in 1933 and rose to the rank of professor before retiring and becoming emeritus in 1969. Jewett also served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Urology from 1966 until 1977 and was the founder and editor-in-chief of Urological Survey. He received the Keyes Medal in 1985, the highest honor in American urology.
