Dorothy Rebecca Best received her BA from Hood College in 1927. After her graduation from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1930, she held the position of Assistant Night Supervisor in the Women's Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital. From 1933 to 1939 she served as the Assistant Supervisor and instructor in the Osler Medical Clinic. In 1939 she became an instructor in obstetrics and gynecology at the Yale School of Nursing and Assistant in Charge at the New Haven Hospital. During World War II, she was a member of the Army Nurse Corp with Base Hospital #118 stationed in New Guinea and Australia and held the rank of First Lieutenant. From 1953 to 1963 she was Director of Nursing Service at the Los Alamos Medical Center in New Mexico. In 1963 she became Chief Nurse of the Project HOPE mission in Trujillo, Peru.
