Arlene M. Butz graduated with a BSN from Penn State University in 1973 and began her clinical nursing career as a staff nurse in the adolescent unit at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Children's Center. After receiving a MSN/PNP from Catholic University in 1978, Butz became an instructor in the pediatric primary care program at the University of Maryland and was a clinically active pediatric nurse practitioner. Butz received a Sc.D from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1987 and was appointed as a post-doctoral nursing fellow in the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Joining the nursing faculty as assistant professor in 1989, she focused on curriculum development and nursing care of HIV/AIDS patients.
