Administrative/Biographical History

W. Bruce Fye, III, was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania and raised in suburban Philadelphia. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Johns Hopkins University, receiving an A.B. in 1968, a M.D. in 1972, and M.A. in History of Medicine in 1978. Fye completed his post-graduate training on the medical service at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center then returned to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as a cardiology fellow in 1975 and in 1976 was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship in the department of history of medicine. In 1978, Fye accepted an appointment as director of the Cardiographics Laboratory at the Marshfield Clinic, Wisconsin, and rose to become the chairman of its department of cardiology (1981-1999). He was also appointed a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin from 1978 until 1999 (starting as an adjunct assistant professor of the history of medicine in 1978 and advancing to full professor in 1990). In addition, during the years from 1989 to 1999, he served as vice-chief of staff at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, Wisconsin.

Fye pursued his interest in the history of medicine as a book collector and dealer and through academic research and publishing. He began collecting books in 1960, and launched his mail order book business W. Bruce Fye Antiquarian Medical Books in in New York City in 1972. The business relocated as he advanced his medical career and closed its online sales in 2013 in Rochester Minnesota. He published his first book in 1987, "The Development of American Physiology: Scientific Medicine in the Nineteenth Century". He was appointed adjunct professor of the History of Medicine, University of Wisconsin in 1990.
Fye was recruited to the Mayo Clinic in 2000 as a professor in the cardiology division as well as professor of history of medicine. In 2005 the Mayo Clinic established the Center for the History of Medicine and Fye was appointed as its founding director. Fye retired in 2014. The following year he and his wife Lois endowed the center, which was renamed the W. Bruce Fye Center for the History of Medicine. Professional memberships and leadership positions include positions as president of the American Association of the History of Medicine (2008-2010), President of the American College of Cardiology (2002-2003) and president of the American Osler Society (1988-1989). Honors and awards include the William H. Welch medal from the American Association of the History of Medicine (2000), induction into the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars (2005), American Osler Society (2009), American Association for the History of Medicine (2022), and the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award (2023).

Scope and Content

The W. Bruce Fye Collection spans his entire career and documents his extensive contributions in cardiology, medical history, and medical book collecting, including his time building the history program at the Mayo Clinic, also known as the W. Bruce Fye Center for the History of Medicine, for which he served as director. The collection includes documents from Fye’s time as a student of Johns Hopkins (undergraduate and medical degrees), his internal medicine residency at New York Hospital- Cornell Medical Center (now New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center), and his time at the Marshfield Clinic. There are also documents from his time as president for the American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), and the American Osler Society (AOS), as well as his time as co-editor for the Profiles in Cardiology series. Other documents relate to Fye’s book collection and antique bookstore mail-order book business, W. Bruce Fye’s Antiquarian Medical Books, which he ran from 1972- 2013. Other material in this collection includes documents for the Ken Burns film, The Mayo Clinic: Faith, Hope, Science, which was released September 25, 2018, in which Fye served as a Senior Historical Consultant. There are also correspondence and research notes on William Osler, Fye’s presidential addresses, reprints, as well as audio and visual material from his lectures.

Archival Arrangement

W. Bruce Fye provided an original inventory, which was used and adapted to fit archival inventory format/ standards. This collection is divided into fourteen different main sections/series. It should be noted that the majority of the material such as photos, correspondence, special events, posters, and awards can be found under the different series that are tilted “Correspondence”, “Photos”, and “Special Events", "Posters", "Books", "Offprint Issues", and "Offprint Collections”. However, the materials/documents such as photos, special events, and correspondence have been listed in other series (besides these main series) because the material corresponded to other material associated with another series (ex. Mayo Clinic Series includes/lists the correspondence related to the Mayo Clinic and isn’t included in the Correspondence Series). As noted above, the material found in this series was originally organized chronologically by topic by Fye and was reorganized digitally to fit the archival organizational structure. This means, physically, all material matches the location/ boxes as how Fye originally organized the material and is not grouped together by how this series is digitally presented. Also, as a result some folder numbers that are part of how Fye originally titled the folders, differs from the folder number digitally given in the system. In a similar manner some titles have been changed to better fit archival needs (mainly the series titled Fye’s Antiquarian Records and Book Collection, which was previously known as Bookish Life: W. Bruce Fye Antiquarian Medical Books).

The W. Bruce Fye Collection is funded by a donation from W. Bruce Fye, who also provided a preliminary collection inventory.
