Abou David Pollack was born in New York City. He received his A.B. in 1929 from Cornell University and his M.D. in 1933 from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Pollack served as a pathologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York from 1939 until 1947, and was associated with the U.S. Army Biological Laboratories at Fort Dietrick, Maryland, from 1947 until 1953. In 1953, he came to Johns Hopkins to serve in the department of pathology at the school of medicine and as a pathologist at the hospital. In 1941, he helped to prepare a classic study of the collagen diseases, and in the following years his research focused on changes which occur in the body's defense mechanisms prior to the onslaught of these diseases.
