Betty Liggett Cuthbert was born in Marysville, Ohio. She studied at Miami University in Ohio before receiving her nursing diploma from Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps from 1944 to 1946. In 1953 she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Johns Hopkins University. She received both her Master of Public Health and her Master of Science in Hygiene from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1960. She held many teaching posts Johns Hopkins Hospital, University, School of Hygiene and Public Health, and the School of Nursing. These included Instructor in Outpatient Psychiatric Services from 1946 to 1950, Instructor in Psychiatric Nursing from 1950 to 1958, Instructor in Behavioral Health from 1960 to 1962, assistant professor of Mental Hygiene from 1962 to 1972, and 1973 to 1983. She received the Johns Hopkins University Heritage Award in 1985. She was an active member of the Johns Hopkins Nurses' Alumni Association. Her research was published in the Journal of Nursing Research and the American Journal of Nursing. Her remarkable career focused on mental health education and research, and she had a particular interest in nursing history., JHH SON Class of 1943
