Jacob H. Conn was born in Baltimore. He received his A.B. in 1925 from the Johns Hopkins University and his M.D. in 1929 from the University of Maryland Medical School. He taught the first course in medical hypnosis at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as an associate professor. In 1969, Conn became professor emeritus. He was chief medical officer of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore, the forerunner of the city's circuit court, and a consultant to the U. S. District Court and the Veterans Hospital. He also developed a worldwide professional reputation in fields such as child psychiatry, medical hypnosis, schizophrenia, and chronic pain. A fellow of the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Conn was a charter member of the American Academy of Child Psychiatry.
