Gilbert H. Mudge

Gilbert H. Mudge was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned an A. B. from Amherst College in 1936. Continuing his education at Columbia University, Mudge received his M.D. in 1941 and a Med. Sc.D. in 1948. He trained at New York's Presbyterian Hospital and served as an U.S. Army Medical Corps captain from 1942 to 1946. After completing a residency in medicine in 1948, Mudge joined the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, where he conducted research in the study of renal function and disease. In 1955, he was appointed as professor and chairman of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, succeeding E. Kennerly Marshall, Jr. In 1961, Mudge served as the first associate dean of postdoctoral medical education. He left Johns Hopkins to accept the position of dean of the Dartmouth School of Medicine in June 1962
