Administrative/Biographical History

In 1982, Johns Hopkins University appointed Carol Gray professor and director of the Division of Nursing in its Evening College. Gray directed the Johns Hopkins University feasibility study on the establishment of a school of nursing with an upper division baccalaureate program. The feasibility study led to the charter of the Consortium for Nursing Education, Inc., which was funded by the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Church Hospital, and Sinai Hospital, all of which had previously closed their nursing diploma programs. In 1983 the Consortium of Hospitals and Johns Hopkins University announced the appointment of Carol Gray as the Dean of the new Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing opened with Carol J. Gray as its first Dean in September 1984. The Johns Hopkins Nurses' Alumni Association established the school's first endowed chair, the M. Adelaide Nutting Professorship. The first traditional baccalaureate degrees were awarded in 1986. A Masters program and a postdoctoral fellows program in nursing began in 1987, and the Ph.D. began in 1993. After occupying several temporary locations on the Johns Hopkins medical campus, the school moved into its new building dedicated to Anne M. Pinkard in 1998.
