The William Alexander Fisher, Jr. Collection includes two diaries and six medical student notebooks. The first diary (8 June-8 July 1911) describes a trip Fisher made with William Halsted and others to visit hospitals in Essendorf and Berlin, Germany, and Bern, Switzerland, to observe surgical procedures. Entries describe activities aboard ship en route from New York, and matters such as the physical facilities, surgical equipment, and procedures in various European hospitals, frequently comparing techniques to those used in the U.S. This diary is accompanied by five items of related memorabilia. The second diary (August 1917-September 1918) describes Fisher's experiences in France during World War I. It is a very descriptive diary, detailing surgical operations and clinical notes, but most importantly the diary cites his work with Dr. J.M.T. Finney and others associated with Johns Hopkins Hospital Base 18 Unit. The medical student notebooks include in detail Fisher's year in Dr. T.B. Futcher's clinical microscopy course and histology notes with drawings, Toxicology and Pharmacology with John Jacob Abel, Obstetrics with J. Whitridge Williams, Pathology with William Welch and Flexner, Physiology with William Henry Howell.
