Administrative/Biographical History
Lowell Reed was born in Berlin, New Hampshire. He received a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Maine. Reed earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1915. Reed taught mathematics at the University of Maine before he was asked to serve as director of the Bureau of Tabulations and Statistics in the War Trade Board during World War I. In 1918, the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health appointed Reed as associate and then associate professor of Biomedical Statistics. Working with Raymond Pearl, Reed developed the algorithms to accurately predict population growth known as the "logistic curve". He was also very interested in mathematical models to explain the spread of infectious diseases. Reed was promoted to professor and director of biostatistics in 1925 and was appointed as dean and director of the School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1937. During World War II, Reed served as a consultant to the Manpower and Medical Statistics to the United States armed forces, U.S. Public Health Service, National Research Council, the Veterans Administration and also served on the National Advisory Health Council. In 1946, Reed was appointed vice president of the Johns Hopkins University for medical activities. He was appointed as vice president of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1949, thus becoming the first administrator to formally serve both institutions. Reed announced his retirement in 1953 and became professor emeritus. Months later, he was appointed president of the Johns Hopkins University to replace Detlev W. Bronk. Milton Eisenhower replaced Reed as president in 1956. Reed served as a consultant or member of many boards including the Rockefeller Foundation, the Commonwealth Fund and the Milbank Memorial Fund. In 1947, he chaired the United States Committee on Joint Causes of Disease which produced the International List on Morbidity and Mortality. The committee was recognized with a Lasker Award in Public Health for its efforts. Reed was also chairman of the Surgeon General's Committee on Medical School Grants and Finances in 1948. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and served as president of the American Public Health Association, the American Statistical Association, the American Association of Schools of Public Health and the Population Association of America. Reed was awarded the Sedgwick Memorial Medal of the American Public Health Association and the Johns Hopkins Hospital Distinguished Service Award in 1956. The Lowell J. Reed Medical Residence Hall on the Johns Hopkins Medicine East Baltimore campus was named in his honor in 1964.
