Administrative/Biographical History

A program of study leading to certification in nurse-midwifery was inaugurated in June, 1956 by the Maternity Center Association, School of Nurse-Midwifery, in affiliation with the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. It included an eight-month course, with four months spent in Baltimore, and four months spent in New York. The Johns Hopkins Hospital initiated its own 8-month Nurse-Midwife Certification Program in 1961, and then incorporated the program into the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, Division of Maternal and Child Health in 1968. A 2-year Nurse-Midwifery Program was offered at the Division of Maternal and Child Health beginning in 1969. In this program, the nurses could earn a Masters of Public Health Degree or a Master of Science Degree, and also received clinical preparation as nurse-midwives. The program was terminated in 1981.
