Hester K. Frederick was born in Baltimore in 1881. She graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1912. In 1917 she became the Fourthh Assistant Superintendent at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Traininng School for Nurses. She held the position of Practical Nursing Instructor at the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing from 1919 to 1927. She then left Hopkins to become the Superintentent of Nurses at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. She returned in 1930 to became the First Assistant Superintendent of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing and remained at this position until her retirement in 1941. She published a book titled "The Relation of the School of Nursing to the Hospital Administrative Unit as It Affects the Student Nurse." In 1938, along with Ethel Northam, Hester K. Frederick wrote a book entitled, "A Textbook of Nursing Practice" based on the curriculum she developed at Johns Hopkins and which was later translated into Chinese. After her retirement, she remained active in the American Red Cross, Home Nursing Program and worked as a Nurses' Deputy for the State of Maryland Office of Civilian Defense during World War II.
