William T. Howard, Jr.

William T. Howard, Jr., was born in Statesberg, South Carolina. He received his A.B. in 1887 from the University of Virginia and his M.D. in 1889 from the University of Maryland. As a graduate student he enrolled in the special courses William Welch was giving in the pathological laboratory at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Howard went to Cleveland in 1894 as a professor of bacteriology and pathology and returned to Baltimore in 1914, where he served as assistant commissioner of health from 1915 until 1919. He then joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and remained there until his retirement in 1940. His contributions in the field of pathology include studies of hypertrophy of the heart, eosinophil cells, ulcerative endocarditis, biology of tumor cells, herpes, small pox, vaccinia, gas cysts of the central nervous system, and emphysema. He was the author of Public Health Administration and the Natural History of Disease in Baltimore, 1797-1920
