Administrative/Biographical History

Judy Crews received her BSN from Boston College in 1963 and her MSN in cardiovascular disease from the Catholic University of America in 1971. From 1970 to 1980 she was on the staff of the Center for Experimentation and Development in Nursing at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was one of the first clinical specialists hired by the hospital for her work in the Cardiac Health Program, the Coumadin Clinic, and the Pacemaker Clinic. She helped implement and studied the model of nurse-management in cardiac clinics. She was an instructor in the Evening College of Johns Hopkins University from 1972-1973. From 1980-1982 she was a Cardiac Care Unit Clinical Specialist at Prince George's County Medical Center. She then worked as a Pacemaker Nurse Specialist in the Eastern Pacemaker Surveillance Center of the Washington, DC Veteran's Administration Medical Center. She was a member of many associations, including the Nursing Development Conference Group, American Heart Association Council on Cardiovascular Nursing, American Nurses Association, Maryland State Heart Association Research Council, and the Heart Association of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees and Nursing Education Committee. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Nurses Association, District 6 from 1982-1986. During her career, Crews Hanks received many service awards and much recognition for her work in cardiac health care. During the 1970s she was particularly active in publishing and speaking about her nurse-managed clinics and their relation to the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory developed by nursing theorist Dorothea Orem.

The Judy Crews-Hanks Collection consists of materials used in her career in the nurse-managed clinics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1970s. The forms, brochures, and patient questionnaires all demonstrate Crews-Hanks' practical application of Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory.
