William G. Reese was born in Lewiston, Utah, and raised in Idaho. He received his B.S. and M.S. in 1938 from the University of Idaho and his M.D. in 1942 from Washington University in St. Louis. He interned in medicine at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, from 1942 until active duty in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. After a residency in psychiatry at the Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1946 until 1948, Reese was a member of the school of medicine faculty until 1951. That year, he became professor and chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Arkansas College of Medicine, a position he held until 1985. He also was an editor of the Pavlovian Journal of Biological Sciences from 1955 until 1979. In 1990, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences awarded him a D.Sc. degree.
