Hideyasu Aoyama was born in Port Arthur or Dairen City on the Liaodong peninsula when it was occupied by Japan (now Dalian, China). He received his MD from Okayama University in 1959, his DPH from the National Institute of Public Health in Tokyo in 1963, and his PhD from the Okayama University Postgraduate Course in Hygiene and Public Health in 1964. In 1969 he received a MPH from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. Aoyama's career covered a wide spectrum of interests including medicine, public health services, epidemiology, health policy and promotion, and occupational medicine. He was the chairman of Okayama University Medical School's Department of Medicine and Preventive Medicine from 1980 until his retirement on March 31, 2000. Aoyama served in many leadership capacities in such organizations as The Japanese Association of Directors of Departments of Hygiene and Public Health at Medical Schools, the World Organization of Family Medicine, the International Epidemiological Association, and the World Health Organization. In recognition of Aoyama's contributions to the fields of medicine, public health and occupational health in Japan and to international public health, he was elected into the Johns Hopkins University's Society of Scholars in 1994. Aoyama and his wife, Sachiko Aoyama, and Etsuko Kita endowed a scholarship starting in 2002 at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health for physicians pursuing research in public health issues in Korea, Japan, and Malaysia.
