Jessie Black was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1899. After graduating from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1930, she accepted the position of Head Nurse and Instructor at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was awarded the Isabel Hampton Robb Scholarship in 1938 and 1939. She received her B.S. in 1939 and her M.A. in 1940 both in Administration in Schools of Nursing from Columbia University. In 1941 she became the first chairman of the Committee on Library, Publications, and Illustrative Materials for the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. From 1941 to 1945 she was the Associate Director of the School of Nursing and Nursing Service at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. During 1943 and 1944 she served as Dean of the Summer School of Nursing at Goucher College. In 1944 she was appointed by the National Nursing Council for War Service to recruit students from colleges throughout the country, a position for which she was granted a three month reprieve from her Associate Director position. She resigned from her position at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1945 following her marriage to Guthrie J. McVicar, Manager of the Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard in Baltimore. She remained active in the Johns Hopkins Nurses' Alumni Association and in 1960 was appointed an Alumnae representative to the Advisory Board of the School of Nursing. She was also a member of the American Nursing Association and the National League for Nursing. She made active contributions to the book by Johns and Pfefferkorn, The Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing 1889-1949.
