Evelyn Ann Eckberg

Evelyn Ann Eckberg was born in Jamestown, New York in 1908. She received her nursing diploma in 1940. She received the highest grade in her class on the State Board of Nurse Examiners examination. After taking courses at the University of Rochester, she received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Chicago in 1943. Eckberg was appointed as Supervisor and Instructor in Surgical Nursing in the Halsted Clinic of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1944. her Master of Science degree from Western Reserve University in 1946. From 1947 to 1948, she was a Senior Instructor in Surgical Nursing at Syracuse University. In the late 1940's she worked for the National Nursing Accrediting Service. She was appointed to the position of Nurse Officer in the Public Health Service in 1951. She was a Nurse Education Officer in the Division of Indian Health in Phoenix, Arizona. She also served in hospitals in San Francisco and New Orleans. In the 1960s, Commander Eckberg moved to the Public Health Service Hospital on Staten Island, New York, where she was active in designing the curriculum for a new class of ship officer for the Navy, the purser-pharmacist. This position filled a shortage in trained medical staff on board Naval ships. She was an instructor and administrator at the Pharmacist Mate Training School. She also developed a manual for use at the school, "Patient Care." For her work on this project, she received a Public Health Service Commendation Medal in 1968. She retired from active service in 1972.
