The collection of building photographs contain approximately 2,500 photos of the exteriors and interiors of about 70 buildings comprising the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Included are photographs of the buildings of the East Baltimore campus that are standing and most of the buildings that have been razed. The building photos include scenes of the grounds, and there also some photos of the community surrounding the medical institutions. The images in this collection are focused primarily on the physical structures and are mostly devoid of people. (Photos of people in buildings are found elsewhere in the collection. For example, a photo of the Octagon Ward, which includes nurses caring for patients, can be found with the Clinical Medicine photos.) Of particular interest in this collection is a series of photos taken in 1889 by Frederick Gutekunst of Philadelphia, printed by the James S. Cummins Studio of Baltimore.
