Administrative/Biographical History

As part of his overall vision for a major university and health complex in Baltimore, Johns Hopkins instructed the Trustees of the Hospital "to establish, in connection with the Hospital, a training school for female nurses. This provision will secure the services of women competent to care for the sick in the Hospital wards, and will enable you to benefit the whole community by supplying it with a class of trained and experienced nurses." In October 1889 the School of Nursing accepted its first class of students.
From the beginning the School demanded high standards of achievement from its nurses in training. Admission requirements were stiff and the course of study evolved into a rigorous three year program of lectures and experience on the hospital wards. Under the strong leadership of Isabel Adams Hampton, Mary Adelaide Nutting, Elsie Mildred Lawler, and Anna D. Wolf the nurses' training school at Hopkins gained an international reputation.
The School's first administrators compiled and published texts on principles and methods of nursing, books on the history of nursing and nursing ethics and initiated the first two professional nursing organizations and journals in the United States.
The Nursing School and its active alumni organization made numerous unsuccessful efforts in the twentieth century to obtain university status for the School. Once a leader in nursing education, the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing eventually could not compete with other institutions with established university programs. In 1970 the School decided to close with the last class graduating in 1973. A short lived Johns Hopkins University School of Health Services, Nursing Education Program existed in the mid-1970s. In 1984, the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing opened, in part due to efforts of the Johns Hopkins nursing alumni.

Scope and Content

Records of Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses document the founding, governance, and leadership of the school from its inception to its closure in 1973. Preserved are the basic administrative documents such as minutes of the Advisory Board, faculty minutes, committee minutes and reports, and items from the Superintendent/Director's office. There are records pertaining to nursing service, education, and student life. The largest part of the collection contains student records from the classes of 1891 through 1973 and student related material such as course outlines and class standings. Records also document school publications and its relationships to other nursing schools and organizations.
