Administrative/Biographical History
| | | | |
The Hugh Hampton Young Collection spans his entire life. Series include professional and personal correspondence, patient materials, publications, diaries, patent documents, photographs, motion picture films, diaries and date books, and ephemera. Professional correspondence includes exchanges of letters with colleagues, patients, and professional organizations. Young's varied personal interests, his civic pursuits, and his accomplishments are documented in his personal correspondence, which includes exchanges with prominent national and international figures. The family correspondence constitutes over 200 letters exchanged between Young and his wife Bessy Colston, both before and during their marriage. There are substantial materials related to his military service with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. This includes his work developing and implementing the Venereal Disease Program in England and France. The patient materials consist of case histories (usually assembled for a research project or article), correspondence with or about patients, patient logs from the Division of Urology, and charts for patients from the Brady Urological Institute. Publications include addresses and manuscripts presented at professional meetings, research material for manuscripts and articles, reprints and drafts of chapters for medical textbooks, and several versions of the manuscript for his autobiography, Hugh Young: A Surgeon's Autobiography, personally edited by his friend and publisher, Alfred Harcourt. Patent documents, with associated drawings, are included for a soap dispenser and for improvements to seaplane landing gear. Photographic materials in the Young papers include prints, negatives, and film, all of which document his medical career and span the wide range of Young's civic activities and personal interests. The ephemera collection includes programs, pamphlets, military documents, postcards, newspaper clippings, and a bookplate collection.

Update on the Brady Urological Institute: Young was succeeded as director of the Brady Urological Institute by Dr. William Wallace Scott in 1946. Dr. Patrick C. Walsh succeeded Scott in 1974. In 1972, with the reorganization of the Department of Surgery, the Division of Urology was made the Department of Urology. In the 1970s, the need for a new building to house the Brady Institute became clear. It was ultimately decided to move the Brady Institute into the Marburg building, one of the original buildings still remaining on the East Baltimore campus. The new quarters had the added advantage of situating the Department of Urology closer to the Division of Renal Medicine, enabling cooperation between theses two related specialties. The Marburg building was renovated, and the new Brady Urological Institute was dedicated on September 29, 1982. Research, teaching and patient care in urology continue there today.

The Hugh Hampton Young Collection was arranged and described under the direction of Lisa A. Mix with assistance of Agota Gold and Marjorie Winslow Kehoe in 1991. Dr. Patrick Walsh, Director of Urology at Johns Hopkins, recognizing the research value of the Young Papers, arranged for the transfer of the Young papers to the Chesney Medical Archives. He generously contributed his time, professional expertise and funding to the processing of the papers. Walsh, and the Johns Hopkins Department of Urology funded the production of an overview guide to the collection, The Legacy of Hugh Hampton Young: Pioneer in Urology (1991) by Marjorie Winslow Kehoe, Nancy McCall and Lisa A. Mix. Numerous individuals also assisted in this project. Dr. Walsh's sons Christopher and Alexander helped locate, pack and move the collection from the basement of the Brady Urological Institute to the Chesney Medical Archives. Maryrose Gans, Administrator for the Department of Urology, helped coordinate administrative aspects of the project. Susanne Ridenour prepared a preliminary inventory of the collection. Mary Todd Glazer of Northeast Document Conservation Center conducted a conservation assessment of the Young papers and advised on the long term preservation of the collection. Drs. William Wallace Scott, A. McGehee Harvey, Hugh Y. Rienhoff, and James Seamans served as resources as the Chesney Medical Archives staff processed and described the collection. Additional members of the Chesney Medical Archives staff who participated in this project include Constantinos Dukissis, Frances Dukissis, and Mary Garofalo. In 2005, Phoebe Evans Letocha oversaw the work of ArchProteus to convert the finding aid to the Chesney Medical Archives online catalog system.

Hugh Hampton Young willed his papers to the Brady Urological Institute of Johns Hopkins. Upon Dr. Young's death in 1945, his papers were stored in the basement of the Brady building. Over the ensuing years the papers gradually fell into disarray as a result of a flood and several shifts of location. In the early 1980s, Alexander and Christopher Walsh (sons of Dr. Patrick Walsh, Director of Urology) worked to locate and gather together the scattered Young papers. In July 1982, Dr. Patrick Walsh authorized the transfer of the Hugh Hampton Young papers to the Medical Archives.
