Paul F. Schilder was born in Vienna, Austria. He received his M.D. in 1909 from the University of Vienna. While in the army during World War I he studied philosophy, and he received his Ph.D. in 1917 from the University of Vienna. In 1918, he was appointed to the faculty in neurology and psychiatry at the University of Vienna, where he became professor extraordinare in 1925. During the same period he met Sigmund Freud and became an active member of the Viennese Psychoanalytic Society. Schilder was a visiting professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1928 and 1930. He later became clinical director of the psychiatric division of Bellevue Hospital in New York, as well as a faculty member in psychiatry at the New York University Medical School.
