Virginia Betzold
25 July 1900 - 18 March 1987
Virginia Betzold was born in Catonsville, Maryland. She received her nursing diploma from Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1933. She began her career as an instructor in nursing arts at the School for Nurses. She was appointed director of nursing in arts in 1938, after spending a year studying at the Florence Nightingale International Foundation in London, England, a position she held until 1941. In 1943 she received her Master of Arts in nursing administration from the Teachers College of Columbia University. From 1943 to 1965 she was associate director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. She was active in many professional associations, including the National Nursing Accrediting Service, the Maryland Nurses Association, and the Maryland League of Nursing Education. She was a life member of the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumnae Assocation and a member of the academic fraternities Pi Lambda Theta and Kappa Delta Pi. She held trustees scholarships all three years of study for her nursing diploma and received the Cullen Prize in 1933. In 1975 she received the Johns Hopkins University Heritage Award.
