Frederick Karl Herpel was born in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. in 1912 from Allegheny College and his M.D. in 1916 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He entered the U.S. Army during World War I, and then served as an orthopedic surgeon at Camp Lee, Virginia, and as chief of the x-ray services at Walter Reed General Hospital. After the war, he moved to West Palm Beach, Florida. During World War II, he was chief medical officer at Fort Bragg. Herpel was highly regarded as a radiologist, serving on the staffs of several hospitals in West Palm Beach and Boynton Beach until his retirement.

Scope and Content

The Frederick Karl Herpel Collection contains material on both the class of 1916 at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the faculty of the school at that time. Various articles, portraits, and books on great men of science, including A Book of Portraits of the Faculty of the Medical Department of the Johns Hopkins University by Doris Ulmann (1922), highlight the collection. Material commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1916 as well as a "Record of the Class of 1916" (1979) are also included.
