Administrative/Biographical History

The Office of Public Affairs originated as an administrative department of The Johns Hopkins Hospital in the mid 1940s. Originally known as The Johns Hopkins Hospital Public Relations Office, the department later became responsible for the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, which at the time consisted of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and its School of Nursing, and the Johns Hopkins University's School of Medicine and School of Hygiene and Public Health.
The department was responsible for media and press relations, special events and projects, and institutional publications including Hopkins Medical News, Dome (originally titled Under the Dome), and the Johns Hopkins Hospital Annual Report.
The department experienced several name changes from 1946 through 1975. From 1946 to 1973, its publications credit the Public Relations Office, or name the Director of Public Relations. For a brief period from 1972 to 1974, several other names for the office were used simultaneously, including the Office of Institutional Public Relations and the Public Affairs Department. By 1975, publications consistently credited the Office of Public Affairs, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. This name held until late in 1994, when it was changed to the Office of Communications and Public Affairs.
Following the expansion of the medical campus and the formation of Johns Hopkins Medicine in 1996, which brought together the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, the office was brought under the banner of Johns Hopkins Medicine and focused more exclusively on its divisions. The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health (later renamed the Bloomberg School of Public Health) and the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing created their own communications departments.

Scope and Content

The Office of Public Affairs Photograph Collection contains photographic materials produced for the office's three primary functions: media and press relations, institutional publications, and special projects and events.
Well represented in the collection are portraits of faculty and staff at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Additionally, the collection contains many photographs documenting health care operations at The Johns Hopkins Hospital; facilities and equipment; and special events such as press conferences, lectures and symposia, exhibits, commemorations, and other celebrations and ceremonies.
The collection comprises a variety of photographic materials, including original negatives, photographic prints and slides, and copy photographs produced by the Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives for preservation and access.

Related Archival Material

Many photographs that originated from the Office of Public Affairs were integrated into other topical photograph collections by archives staff, most notably the People at Work and Portraits of Individuals photograph collections. Additional photographs produced by the office are located in the records of its successor body, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Office of Marketing and Communications.
