Margaret S. Brogden was born at Long Green, Baltimore County. After receiving her nursing diploma in 1902, she worked as a private duty nurse and then as a public health nurse for the Babies' Milk Fund Association and the Instructive Visiting Nurses Association. From 1909 to 1931 she was the Director of the Social Service Department of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She helped to organize the American Association of Medical Social Workers. She served as its treasurer and on many committees, and was made an honorary member. In 1922 she prepared the instructional book, " Handbook of Organization and Method in Hospital Social Service". She was a pioneer in the field of medical social work and training.
