Walter L. Winkenwerder was born in Greenville, Wisconsin. He received his B.S. in 1923 from Beloit College and his M.D. in 1927 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Winkenwerder was an instructor in anatomy at the Johns Hopkins University for two years before completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at the hospital. He joined the faculty of the school of medicine in 1930 and was made an associate professor emeritus in 1965. He served on the staff of the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1933 until 1965, and from 1957 until 1965 he was the physician in charge of the Johns Hopkins Allergy and Infectious Disease Clinic. During World War II, Winkenwerder served in the U.S. Army with the Johns Hopkins-affiliated 118th Unit General Hospital in Australia, the Philippines, and New Guinea. For more than a year, he served as the unit's chief of medicine. Winkenwerder authored nearly 50 professional papers and was president of the American Academy of Allergy.
