“The hospital Bulletin contains announcements of courses of lectures, programmes of clinical and pathological study, details of hospital and dispensary practice, abstracts of papers read and other proceedings of the Medical Society of the Hospital, reports of lectures, and other matters of general interest in connection with the work of the Hospital. The Bulletin was started in 1889 by John Hurd, the first Superintendent of the hospital. Hurd was the editor from its first issue until he retired in 1911.This serial publication chronicles the activities and events of the hospital and related institutions. Much of it is devoted to documenting scientific research by medical faculty about medical conditions, treatments, and related advancements. Faculty often read these reports before the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Society. The publication also covers medical instruction and training and contains announcements, programs, descriptions of new books received, reports about the hospital, and proceedings of societies, including clubs. Though originally a publication of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, in 1925 the Bulletin became a joint publication of the hospital and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The publisher for most of its existence has been the JHU Press with the exception of the years 1925-1930 during which it was published by The Williams & Wilkins Company. The Bulletin became a successful and authoritative medical resource that could be found in medical libraries around the world.
One issue was published per calendar month. During the early years, however, a few issues comprise more than one month and in a few cases an issue was not produced for every month. From 1889-1924 the issues are arranged into one volume per year, containing between nine to twelve issues from January to December. Starting in 1925 issues are arranged into two volumes per year, one from January to June and the second from July to December.
Every volume has a volume-level index as part of its final issue. From 1889-1924, the index is in the December issue. From 1925 onward the index is in the June and December issues each year. There are also two cumulative indexes to multiple volumes, one in 1906 for the first sixteen volumes and the other in 1951 for volumes 17-85.
Four volumes contain a supplement from the Bulletin of the Institute of the History of Medicine for the years 1933-1934. Also, in a few instances a supplement accompanies an issue. Additionally, there are four supplements that were published separately during 1972-1974 and 1976.
The title of this publication from its first year up until 1966 is the Bulletin of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1967 the title was changed to The Johns Hopkins Medical Journal which it remained for the duration of its run.

Scope and Content

The collection contains every issue from every volume for the entire run of this publication, from 1889-1982.
There are also several bound ledgers of cash books and subscriber lists for the early years of the publication.
