Administrative/Biographical History

Clinton C. Brown was born in Hamilton, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.A. in 1948 and a Ph.D. in 1952. He specialized in medical psychology and started his career at a state hospital in Cincinnati. In 1952 Brown was appointed as a clinical research psychologist at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Perry Point, Maryland. He came to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry as an assistant professor of medical psychology in 1962. Brown was the director of the Sleep Study Laboratories from 1967 to 1972. He was promoted to associate professor in 1966 and left in 1985. He was also affiliated with the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center at the Spring Grove State Hospital in Catonsville. Brown was elected to the Pavlovian Society of America in 1956 and was also a member of the Society of Psychophysiological Research, serving as its president from 1964 to 1965.

Scope and Content

The Clinton C. Brown Collection consists of materials pertaining to his overall work and his work with Horsley Gantt at Perry Point Veteran's Administrative Hospital. The collection includes posters from a presentation, slides with some accompanying papers including some from the Sleep Study Laboratories, and photocopies from his lab at Spring Grove State Hospital.
