Lawrence B. Emge was born in Baynesville, Maryland. In 1927 he was employed by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Henry Phipps Clinic as a pychiatric aide. At the time of his retirement in 1955, Emge was the chief information clerk of the Henry Phipps Clinic. He enjoyed painting as a hobby and created many pictures of Johns Hopkins Hospital builidings and its grounds as well as pictures of well known Maryland builidings. After retirement, Emge's art work was displayed in local galleries including a one-man show at the Baltimore Civic Center.

Scope and Content

The Lawrence B. Emge Collection consists of a leatherbound book of etchings published in 1932, four separate etchings, and a few notecards. Most of the scenes are of Johns Hopkins Hospital builidings, but also include an etching of Johns Hopkins' birthplace at White Hall in Anne Arundel county and Johns Hopkins' city mansion. In the book of etchings, a short biography of Johns Hopkins by Harry S. Sherwood is of particular interest.
A complete set of the Emge prints is included in the collection, along with duplicate prints.
