Harold A. Menkes

Harold A. Menkes was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received his medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 1963. After serving an internship at University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, he returned to Vancouver to practice medicine. In 1965, he resumed his medical training as a resident at the Philadelphia General Hospital. He completed a fellowship in pulmonary physiology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969, and in 1971, a fellowship in respiratory diseases at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. Pursuing research in pulmonary circulation and lung mechanics, Menkes was offered a joint appointment as assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1971. He was chosen as medical director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital's pulmonary function lab in 1974 as well as director of a similar lab at the Good Samaritan Hospital. In 1980, Menkes received a joint appointment as professor environmental health services.
