Dorland J. Davis was born in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in 1933. He received a M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1937 and his Dr.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1940. Davis was commissioned as a U.S. Public Health Service Medical Officer in 1939 and achieved the rank of Assistant Surgeon General in 1968. His first assignment to the National Institute of Health's Division of Infectious Diseases led to research opportunities in poliomyelitis, infectious hepatiitis and field studies in the influenza viruses. Davis was appointed as associate director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, National Institutes of Health, in 1956 and served as the director of the organization from 1964 until his retirement in 1975. He received many awards during his long career in public health service including the Distinguished Service Medal, United States Public Health Service in 1971. Davis was elected to the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars in 1978.
