Joseph K. Hoffman
Joseph K. Hoffman was the janitor in the Pathological Laboratory during the years that William Welch was the director of the Department of Pathology. In a April 12, 1927 letter to Welch Hoffman, refers to his nearly 32 years "spent in your service" and inquires, "I am looking forward with the hope that you will be able to find a place for me in the new library so that I may again enter your service." Welch thanked Hoffman for the gift and stated, "Your two scrapbooks with suitable acknowledgements of you as the compiler will be deposited in our new library".

Scope and Content

The Joseph K. Hoffman consists of one scrapbook which was presented to William Welch on the occasion of William Welch's 76th birthday, April 8, 1927. This is the second of two scrapbooks given to Welch by Hoffman. The first scrapbook consists of clippings covering the period 1925 to 1926 and was presented to Welch on the occasion of his 75th birthday. This scrapbook can be found in the Welch papers (Box 187). Both scrapbooks contain clippings primarily related to the Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, but also include science topics.
