Personal name, Asper, Samuel P.

Samuel P. Asper was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He received his A.B. in 1936 from Baylor University and his M.D. in 1940 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After completing his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he was a research fellow in medicine at the Harvard Medical School. During World War II, Asper served with the 5th General Hospital Harvard Unit of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, eventually earning the rank of captain. In 1946, he returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital as an assistant resident physician. Asper was named an instructor in medicine at the medical school in 1947 and eventually rose to the rank of professor. In 1957, he became an associate dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and chief of the division of endocrinology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was vice president for medical affairs at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1970 until 1973, when he took a leave of absence to serve as dean of the medical school and chief of staff of the hospital at the American University of Beruit, Lebanon. He returned to Johns Hopkins in 1979 as a professor in medicine.
